Driveshaft Length???

I’ve got a ‘99 E150 with a 5.4/4r100. I just downgraded my lunched 9.75 for a good 8.8. I’m not planning on doing any major towing, nor do I load the van heavily, so I should be ok.

However, my driveshaft is about 2 1/2” too short now. It went into the tail shaft but there was 2 1/2” of shiny yoke showing. And of course it leaked! I looked at Rock Auto and compared lengths for V6, 4.6 and 5.4. I assume the V6 and 4.6 use the 4R70 transmissions as they were 81” and 82” whereas mine is 76” according to their measurements. Am I stuck finding a shop that’ll extend the driveshaft? Should I bother crawling under vans at the local pick a part? I suppose I’ve turned my van into a cobbled Frankenstein.

IMHO if you're using components not part of the original build or that were offered from the factory you'll probably be forced to have a custom length drive shaft. You already admit you've created a not-so-standard vehicle so there ya have it.

Good luck with this---please let us know how this works out!

Well, I dropped my driveshaft off at the driveline shop so they can make me a new 2” longer one to the tune of $525. They’ll use my yoke ends, so at least I’ll have my old shaft if the 8.8 blows up and I find another 9.75. Always hate hearing of the mixing and matching others do that works out. Such nonsense never works for me.

On a positive note though, the oil in the 8.8 was a nice bluish black with no metallic flecks to be seen. And it did roll down the highway quietly.
