transmission swap
I have a pretty "53" Effie presently powered by a small block 302 with it's C-4. I want to keep the motor but maybe change the tranny for a 4 speed OD Ford tranny. Donor drive train was from a 78 Country Squire Wagon. Can anyone tell of direct swap out tranny's that will fit. Ford only please Thanks, Ken

Find out what year your 302 is then cross-reference it to tranny's that will work with it. Hopefully one will be what you are looking for. Maybe something in the 80's or early 90's Mustang 5.0 era???
Places to look for cross-reference info: not sure, but I'd try a Blue Oval dealership first. If they don't know, perhaps they know where you can get your info.

I have a 1987 Ford T'bird AOD transmission with a 1971 351W in my 56 F100. The AOD replaced a FMX.
If your engine is a pre 1981 you will have to change the flex plate to a 28.2 oz balance with 164 tooth. I am not sure when the AOD arrived or was changed to electronic controled. Maybe between 1984-1993
You can get all of the parts that are required from www.windsor-fox.com.
I used all new parts : flexplate,starter,flexplate and trans fasteners, lokar AOD TV (kickdown cable).
Make sure that you get blockplate,converter coverplate,transyoke and filltube (dip stick) from doner vehicle. If you are going to buy a new or rebuilt trans you can get these parts from windsor fox also.
You may have to add a helper spring to the lokar cable at the trans end. Mine wasn't strong enough to pull it back.
Make sure you follow the Lokar instructions these trans shift by pressure if they aren't set up correctly you will burn it up. It's no big deal to get it set up correctly
