Hey all. I have been thinking about swapping my NP435 for a tremec 5 speed. I have a '79 F-150 long bed 2wd. Has anyone had any experience in this kind of swap? Can I get some good money for my transmission? I've been thinking about the 3550.

I have not done this swap but you talking a T5 from a Mustang? What motor you have and do with the truck?
Is that $3550 for a used NP435????
I want what your smoking!
You can get a ZF5 for that money and have over drive. I Paid think $200 for one out of a 85 truck and works great. It replaced a wore out T18.

The 3550 is a very decent transmission but very prone to leaking. Google it. Mine leaked brand new before the car was off the jacks. When I took it apart at the halve's it had nearly no "Anerobic" sealant see photos. Bought the sealant and resealed it hasn't been a problem. The other issue is at high revs they don't want to shift too well but for what your doing it won't be a factor. In your truck it will be a great upgrade. You didn't mention what engine you have so sourcing a bell housing may hinder your progress. Mine is mated to a 460. You'll also need a drive shaft
I have a 302 in it. No I'm not asking $3550 for an NP435. Lol. I'm wanting a 3550. I don't want a t5 because my wife's base mustang has a t5 and it needs to be rebuilt. But didnt know how much an NP435 would go for. Also not sure what a good price for a 3550 would be.
The Tremec used is around $1500 and there are bellhousings on eBay that fit the 302. Less than $300. Used tremecs might be a bad idea as most people unlike yourself that buy them are generally not looking to put them behind stock engines and they see more abuse. Agreed, T5's have a pretty bad rep and I personally would not spend my money on one
Thank you for those numbers. Buying anything used comes with a risk. But i have a stock 302 and want to make the truck easier to drive around town. The NP435 is very clunky and loose feeling in the shifting. Plus it made more for pulling and work than anything. I want my truck to drive easier without going to an automatic. Plus I'm on a budget and if I have to wait to save up more money for a new transmission, I will. I know ill have to buy a new drive shaft. Also may as well replace the Ujoints since they are pretty worn.
