Transmission cover

I have a 1953 F-250 stake bed that I am working. I don’t remember what was used to seal the holes around the floor shift and hand brake on the transmission cover. I don’t recall any boot type device,however, I do remember it being a dusty ride around the ranch with my Grandad.

I think they used dumb dumb putty. It’s an old body panel filler that stays kinda flexible. Seems I remember having to clean it off one of my trucks.
