I am restoring a 1951 F3 and going to make it a flat deck with side racks.
I have purchased white oak board materials and I am looking at advice and direction on staining and finishing the wood.
I want to make the final finish a "golden" colour
Thanks Flipper55
Minwax makes a Golden Oak stain that you might like.... most home centers & hardware stores will have samples so go check it out, easy to apply and when dry, finish the wood off with a least 3 coats off clear polyurethane. This is my bed ,white oak (no stain) with 4 coats of semi gloss clear.
White oak will hold up well outdoors with no finish, but will turn gray.
However, If you want to finish and use the bed, I prefer Boiled Linseed Oil for your application. It’s a great dealer, but must be done annually. And NEVER throw the oiled rags in the trash (spontaneous combustion).
If you want it shiny, use a high quality spar varnish with UV stabilizers. Available at marine stores like Jamestown Distributors online. The off the shelf stuff at the big box stores won’t give you much quality. It’s the sunshine that eats wood finish, so the higher quality stuff will last better. Spar varnish will be somewhat amber and will “golden” your oak well.
