Spongy Brakes
1995 F350 Crewcab, 8' bed. 7.3 Powerstroke, a/t
Truck failed vehicle inspection some time back, ABS and Brake light on. Replaced front calipers, pads, hoses, all lines and fittings. Replaced master cylinder and checked out the contacts on parking brake.
Lights still on, pedal spongy. I am using an older Blue Point pressure bleeder.
Truck sat for a while, I really need it. Instead of just buying and changing parts, I removed the ABS valve off frame under drivers area and and replaced off a parts truck. The pedal is better, still not good. Truck has almost no brakes going backward on a slight grade.
is it possible the master cylinder is also not a very good one?
Not sure where to start looking.
I had been battling brake problems for as long as I've owned my truck. I could adjust them and they would be better for a while but over time begin to fade. Last year I ordered all new hardware and had the parts sitting in the garage ever since. The past few days I noticed having to press harder and harder to get the truck to stop so I decided to tackle the job. 12 hours and several trips to the parts store later I have better brakes than I've had for 18 years. I had a leaking wheel seal that wasn't helping anything, and who ever last installed brakes had them in wrong. The primary and secondary shoes were swapped on each side and the adjustor in the drivers side was installed backwards so it loosened the brakes instead of tightening them.
I have better brakes but not real good ones. Perhaps I should pull the rear wheels but I haven't had the time yet.
