2003 expedition question

I have a 03 expedition 5.4L 4x4. The transmission is out. Can I take out the transmission and transfer case out and install a 2WD trans and drive shaft? I am looking for a less expensive method to get this back on the road but I don't know if the original rear end can be used and basically, is this even a realistic solution??
