The Banks claim is with their full system they sell. Test vehicle: 1999 Ford F-350 crew cab dually; 6.8L Triton V-10; 4R100 4-speed automatic; 4.10 rear axle ratio; 7500 lbs solo weight; 20,000 lbs combined towing weight.
Best increase of +56 hp, +67 lb-ft torque, and 7% more miles to the tank-full.
Will i see these numbers on mine? Probably not. But they should be close.
I'm going with the Banks headers, Voliant CAI and 5 star tunes.
The '99 V-10s were down on power to start with as they were pre-PI (Performance Improved) that the later 2V motors got, PI brings better intake manifold and cylinder heads.
For starters, I wish my X had a 4.10. Tom's 4.88 is my goal if I ever get the money to do it.
I went for the Banks header kit on my 6.8 (Minus tune). I also went with 5 Star tuning and I would never go with anyone else. The tunes the sent me are perfect. If they werent, they'd fixed them.
Banks "power pack" was basically a canned tune for a crazy price, from what I saw.
Did I notice a jump in HP? No, not really. What I noticed is that as I got into the higher RPMS,4,000 + the engine really started to breath and become more efficient. I felt like it was making more power at higher RPMs. The V-10 seems to like the higher RPM.
Does that make sense to anyone, or am I losing it?
^^^From what I've read about the Modular Motors they all love the higher RPM's so no you're not imagining things. I know when my puny 2V 5.4 with 3:73 rear gears gets up around 3K RPM it becomes highly responsive to throttle input. Sadly since that motor is in an '05 E350 weighing right at 8,400 its NOT meant be a rocket--and its not!
5 Star Tunes are most beneficial for the trans, however, around 3/4 throttle the air/fuel mixture changes to OPEN Loop with the 5 Star tune. This means more fuel to air, thus increasing power in the higher rpms. Ford's design is for the loop to stay in a CLOSED position maintaining a Stochiometric mix of around 14.5:1 air/fuel. Headers with the tune can really wake the V10 up in the rev range. It did mine.
I know the V10 is considered a high rev motor. But all motors make more hp at higher revs.
It's torque we V10 people should be looking at.
May I suggest the reason most say the V10 wakes up at higher rpms is the torque converter is not stalling and is locked up. I think waking up is just the torque converter not being soft and slippy anymore at higher engine speeds.
For those of you who have never spent $300 for a new performance valve body, shift kit, and such you have no idea what you are missing. A few hours under transmission with pan off is all it takes.
once you have done this less than $500 mod you will know what I'm saying.
Well after my little catalytic converter issue, I found out the truck already has a magnaflow muffler on it. That and the cat is in great shape. And it's all 3 inch.
so looks like exhaust wise, its just headers and a black tip.
I can't remember where I got mine. There are lots of places to buy one.....as above too.
There are issues with a PCM program raising pressures without actually having hard parts. I'm no transmission expert, that's just what I read. These valve bodys are not just shift kits. But that is 1 thing they do have. They also have recalibratd bores to accommodate the extra pressure from a pressure valve that is also installed.
So, shift kit, recalibrated accumulater bores, and a pressure valve. That's all I know. Other than when I drive one of my excursions that does not have it I feel like it's pushing thru a foot of snow that ain't there.
I recently put the Banks cat back, air intake, and tune on my EX. I do like the sound of the exhaust however i did not go with the headers at this time as I really didn't feel like playing the exhaust stud roulette game right now. Anyway, I installed the tune and can't really say I've noticed a real difference in performance. I am running the economy/tow tune. At this point I am seriously considering removing the tune and going back to stock so I can stop using the premium fuel. I was very surprised the economy/tow tune required premium fuel.

I went back and pulled my instructions. I am using the work/tow tune as it allows for factory towing capacity. The instructions say it requires 91 octane or higher. The other available tunes tunes say for towing up to 6,000 pounds and I tow heavier than that.
