6 CD swap ?

Have the single CD player in my 2000 F150. Want to switch to a 6 CD as my single will not eject. Question is ; does anyone know if this has the 12 pin plug so that I could simply hook up a magazine changer or is the 6 CD in-dash a better bet ? Thanks for any help.

Hi and welcome to FTE
If I was going to change it over, I would get the AM/FM Cassette deck with changer controls and the magazine changer because there are still a few tapes floating around out there.

I am not sure about your question, but I don't think that the indash changer has the hook-up for the magazine changer, at least I have never seen a truck optioned that way.

Guess I did not word that too well.

What I was asking was if a magazine changer would hook up to and work with my existing factory single CD player or if I should just scrap it and put in the 6 CD in dash unit. I agree with the idea of the tape though and have seen a few Ford units floating around that were AM/FM, tape, 6 CD in dash units. That's getting pretty complicated. Do those units hold up well ? Thanks again.

I don't know, when I find a good cd/cassette deck, I am going to install one. I don't think that your deck will control a changer. Sorry.

Some of the single decks were designed to work with a seperate cd changer, but some were not. My single player in my 2002 Supercrew Lariat is not designed for that. I am planning on installing an in-dash 6 disc. I have one in my mustang and love it. However, if you are making copies of CD's, you can't play ones with home made labels on them. They will get stuck everytime. If you go with a seperate CD changer, I would recommend getting both an after market deck and changer. Good luck

My last truck, a 2002, my salesman swapped my stereo out. Gave me a single cd for the cassette, and I had a 6 disc in the back storage compartment. It was all stock. The last truck had the cd in the rear storage area behind the back seat. It was apain to change cd's. So he had a lease turn in that he swapped radio's with. On the stereo I had to hit the cd button twice to shuffle between them.

If your head unit has a "CD" button, then it (supposedly) will work with the Ford CD changer, if not, it won't.

Alternatively, you could buy a dual-media (cassette & single CD) unit, which will also crontrol an external changer, or you could get the CD6 in-dash changer. You have significantly more options with OEM replacement head units than you do with OEM external CD changers.

Oh, yeah. There are a couple of recent threads in the audio forum about various compatibility/changer issues in late-model F-150s.

Just thought I'd chime in. Unless you can find a deal on a changed out 6 disc dash unit, don't spend good money on one. They are notoriously unreliable. You may have noticed that about 2 years ago all the aftermarket companies had them and now they don't - not one in the entire market. It takes a certain amount of room for a decent mechanism is what my friends who design this stuff tell me. The Ford indash changer unit (I have one in my SVT Focus) is sweet, but it malfunctions a lot and very few last 2 years. If you compare the dealer price on this unit with aftermarket stuff you can put very nice equipment in your truck for that money... That's what I did with my F150. Sony CD deck, wired remote to the left of the steering column, 4 Pioneer speakers, a sub in back on the left side where the factory changer would have gone, 2 amps under the drivers seat, a changer in the console (captains chairs) all bought from On-line sources for a grand total of $460. (About $900 at circuit city prices) I guarantee it sounds and works as sweet as anything at any price, unless you want to go with ear bleeding competition volume levels. Just my 2 cents.

I just bought an OEM MP3 player from http://www.radiosandmore.com/

I'll make an attempt to sell the original (dual-media) head unit on ebay, but it'll have to do well to be worthwhile. Radios and More will give me a $225 trade-in on it because it came out of a "current" year model. (They told me they currently give rebates for '02, '03, and '04 head units.) So, even if it doesn't do well on ebay, I end up only paying $175 for an OEM head unit that retails for $400.

Likewise, depending on what you're looking for, you may find it on ebay. In a day or two, I'll have my dual-media up there. Last time I checked, there were about 8 CD6 in-dash changers listed. (A couple of days ago.) Some are new, and have never even been installed in a vehicle. Many, like mine, will have been pulled from the original after a week or two of use, replaced by a "better" OEM unit or an after-market unit.

After about 2 days of looking, these two places and a couple of Ford parts wharehouses (ridiculously priced) are the only places I was able to find OEM head units. You could always go to your local Ford dealership and probably by one there for about the same price as Radios and More, but I doubt they'd give you the trade-in.

Which ones, and where? If you're talking about the MP3 unit, it would have to be less than $175 and still come with at least a one-year warranty to even get my attention.

If you're talking about the dual-media units, that's why I'm glad I'm getting the trade-in from Radios and More.

I'll check when I get home and post the sites I surfed for some exceptional prices. Right off, though, after a bunch of research I put in Pioneer speakers. For the modest amount of power you feed em they sure pump out some sound! We put the same ones in the SVT, even though it had the "audiophile" system. MAJOR upgrade for a few bucks! I'll follow up...
