Unhappy click click click

I just installed a rebuilt 7.3 non turbo diesel engine in my daughters F250 Ford pick-up. When I turned the key on the
glow plug controller started cliccking imediately. I don't know
nuttin about diesel. This is the first one I have ever worked on.
I have a book that tells me how to test the glow plugs, wiring
harness and controll modual. I have not done that yet. I feel like I might have some wire connected up to the wrong place. Is the clicking noise normal. Any suggestions on what to look for?

Are you getting the rapid clicking like "click-click, click-click" or the regular "click!" for around 6-8 seconds before the rapid clicking starts? Those controllers will not heat very long if you have some burnned out plugs. Unplug them individually and check them with an ohmmeter. They should read a dead short, with little or no resistance. You can also use a test light with the ground clip hooked to the pos. cable on the battery. Then just unplug the connector and touch the top of the glow plug with the point of the testlight. If it lights up, it's good. It's not as accurate as the ohm test, but it sure is easier.

Thanks to everyone that replied.
When one of you told me some clicking was normal I continued like I knew what I was doing. We found both batteries low. Charged one and replaced the other. Turned on key and had short click click click. Then everything worked like I expected it should. The new engine started after about 1 minute of cranking and has been working great ever since. I bought this engine from Jasper engines out of Indiana. Their service has been great.
quick delivery, through explination of what I would recieve and good follow-up when I called for help Saturday. Only complaint is that the drain plugs were all left open from the factory and I lost some antifreeze. One bolt was loose by the thermostat and that gave me a small leak. Other tan that everthing went well. Beautiful engine. If I ever need another I know where to go.
