Alternator Rebuild Time

Well guys, decided the drive the Ex today and while backing it out of the garage, I heard a strange noise under the hood. Like a whine. Anyhow, shut off the A/C and the sound was still there.

Over the past couple years, in certain temps, I noticed what I assumed was a pulley or tensioner that was squeaking. Last time I drove it, I noticed that the ScanGauge was only showing around 12.4 volts. Hmm.

Back on topic...despite the engine only running long enough to back out of the garage, the alternator was almost too hot to touch. I then took the stethoscope and touched the alternator with the engine running. Noisy....for want of a better term...notchy noisy.

I called the local alternator shop and they suggested I bring it in. I've used these guys often and they are very good...but I wonder why they though bad diodes from what I explained? Perhaps the lack of voltage?

Replace the tensioner as well. Also if your coolant hose isnt routed behind the alternator now would be the time to change that as well.

Good advice, thanks.

Today, I had to move the Ex for some virtual tour pics to be taken of the garage. The folks that built my garage want to put it on their website..

Anyhow...when I started it today...all was quiet and it was putting out 13 volts and change. I'm still gonna pull it and get it checked out...
