Engine ID

I have an engine ID question. On the block by the bell housing the numbers appears to read B 281**, this though is what it appears to be. However, on the heads (left) the numbers are NH129 and on the right cylinder head the numbers are B 189. Both cylinder heads are ID as 8 CM, Mercury, however, when looking at the chart furnished by "vanpelsales", I find discrepancies in the ID for a Ford engine or a Mercury Engine. I would like to know which engine I have, the displacement and the HP rating. If this would be any clue (help), the numbers ont he intake manifold are CM 5520 or CM6620.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Monte, Flaflathead

You will never know until you pull a head and measure the stroke. Flattys are notorious for having parts swapped over the years.

49-51 Mercs had 8CM heads and a 4 bolt carb aluminum intake.

You can try this and see if the assembly date of the block is what you expect.
