A question for the chipmaster
It's not as powerful as the van is, (of course), but it's adequate. But, I am never one to settle for adequate.
In steep grades at roughly 6 to 8 percent with full throttle I slowed down to about 48 to 50 mph in second gear at 3500 rpm.
I can tell the engine has far more pontential than that. At 3500 it doesn't even sound like it's working hard like my old 460 did. (Maybe a 4.10 axle is in order instead of the 3.73... ah! but those sweet mpg's it logs will go away when solo driving).
My van can walk away from it, but my truck is far more useful whenever we go out camping in the high mountains.
Question: Will the Diablo chip give me that edge I need with the trailer towing program? And can I switch from premium fuel back to 87 octane when not towing?
Which Diablo would you recommend?
Thanks for any advice!
recently purchased a 2003 Super Duty with a 5.4 Triton. I tow usually with my V-10 equipped van, but I love the way the truck handles the trailer in general.

1. 2 stage chip. 1 tune for performance (premium fuel), the other is the stock position (no changes). The stock position, naturally, allows 87 octane.
2. 3 stage chip. 1 tune for performance (premium fuel), 2nd tune for 87 octane performance (very slight power increase with transmission characteristics optimized), and finally, the stock position.
I believe you'll be pleasantly surprised with the results.
A lot less shifting on the grades with more power to climb them. Heck, even a small vehicle benefits... I had to tow a club trailer through the mountains 2 years ago with the company truck (3.0L Ranger) and it made all the difference in the world! The 5.4, while it won't become a monster with the chip, will give a nice improvement while towing because the torque increase is fairly substantial considering its a bolt-on modification.
Thanks..I'll be sending my order soon. Just as soon as I know which is the correct one for me.
3102 is a three stage.
3141 is a two stage (performance program is custom)
3142 is a three stage (2 custom performance programs)
When you add an additional tune (such as 87) to the 3101 it essentially becomes a 3102.
