I wish I had some digital photo's of a 74' I use to have but they are all on paper. I will try to remember to get them scanned one of these days but for now I will try to explain.
The tail lights on the 73-79 trucks are very flat. What I did was remove the tail light and use it for a pattern. I cut out a piece of 1/8" steel in the proper shape and drilled holes in the top and bottom for mounting. I then made some spacers so that it would fit flush with the body when mounted in the tail light hole. Next I cut out the center of the 1/8" plate to fit a oblong sealed beam truck-lite. I also drilled a 2" hole in the bottom for a 2" clear sealed beam truck-lite to be used as a back-up light for a finished look. This was back in 1993 so the LED's were not yet available but they are now in the same size lighting.
The other option is to just get some LED bulbs like the others stated above.
their nice lights crumm, even the non-Led ones are really bright, that's what i used when i build the steel body on my 79. you can see them in my gallery
on that show trucks the other day, he had a plug in LED light bulb for the rear. but it was a flat panel that mounted to the light cup, in between the lense, it was much bigger contaning much more LED bulbs, i was hoping to come across those for these trucks
