I have a 98 2WD Ranger with 83k miles. When i get on the brakes hard the whole truck, not just the pedal, shakes really rough. The right side locks up before the left even under light braking. The right rim also collects much more brake dust than the left. My first guess was a warped rotor. I took it apart down to the spindles. Sure enough the rotor was fishy. I had those turned, put new ceramic pads on, and lubed the bearings. The rotors went on good and turned easy. But after putting pressure back in the caliper, the right side is much harder to turn than the left. Would holding the pads to tight be consistant with a bad caliper? Could the bad caliper cause a rotor to warp? Any other ideas? Thanks folks.
If you tried to compress the caliper and were sucessful you need to look upstream of it for the problem. Follow the line out of the wheel and up the axle to your culprit. Think of it as the yellow brick road.
Seriously, though;
If you have not tried compressing the caliper and confirmed that it goes in and out smoothly you need to. First.
I see only two possibilities here (but I could SURE be wrong):
#1 - The cliper piston is sticking in the caliper.
#2 - A valve of some type upstream of the caliper is keeping hydraulic pressure on the caliper after peddle release, preventing it from retracting.
HTH.
P.S. . . or it could be some silly computer gizmo, I guess . .
Hey guys,
There are no pins on a 98. I did replace the abutment clips "slippers". I had to compress the caliper to get the pads on. It did compress but not as far as the other side. Would a hose or proportioning valve keep it from compressing all the way? Really thinking about replacing calipers. The price isn't bad at $36, except for that $50 core charge. OUCH! If I do go that route, am I correct in thinking that you would want to replace them both? Thanks for the help so far.
The pins I was talking about are were the caliper bolts go in, they have the little rubber boot on them. Check out the link I have in the tech info post on the front brakes.
