Wanted to post an update.
I have a 195* thermostat. I put in a new pump (the impeller does not have a clocked direction as I thought - the fins are straight)and checked for obstructions. For whatever reason the "inlet" pipe to the core was not heating at all.
After all my headache of dropping the box, putting in a new core, and a new pump I checked out a fellow FORD buddy's truck. The pipes were backwards compared to mine - so I swapped them and shortened them. Finally, I have heat going to the new box. Unfortunately, I get very little heat in the cab, but at least the defroster is trying to work. I'm suprised the shop manual has the illustration backwards - the core inlet is on the passenger side and the outlet is the driver's side. Now, to install a higher temp t-stat...maybe I'll get past "O."

put a coolant system flush T in the upper hose off the heater core remove the cap when you fill the system this lets the air out close it start the engine crack the cap loose it should spray out then you'll know if you have any flow and it will bleed any resiual air out of the system 300 sixes are known for getting air-bound

In the winter I always used a "Ford thermostat" in front of the radiator on my 300-6. Either cardboard or a winterfront that you can buy made out of vinyl coated canvas.

Have you pot in one of those flush tees and made sure that all of the passages were clear by taking hoses off and plugging them etc? You can make water flow out anywhere with one of those.

I would suspect a restriction in the water outlet from the engine due to corrosion of some kind..

I had a problem with no heat in my 79 302. It had the hose bypassing the thermostat. With this bypass in place, there was not enough pressure to force water through the heater core. I plugged the bypass and now have plenty of heat.

The heatercore can flow water in either direction.
It is supplied from the upper hose on the engine (via intake or t-stat housing) and returns to the waterpump, just like the radiator. I have run mine hooked up either way and it heats the same.
Make sure that your cable coming from the controls is actually moving the flap all of the way, it is adjustable and I had to adjust mine when I got my truck.

On my 74 100 I had replaced the heater hoses, put them on reverse of what they should have been and didn't get any heat..I swapped them around and the heat worked again..Maybe I just had an air lock that was fixed when I switched the hoses around..I don't know for sure..

You definetly had an air lock, they do work both ways. There isn't any way for the core to know if you didn't hook them up the same way as the factory did.
