Thinking of buying some hedman shorties for my bronco 5.0 4WD as I am also caming it up a bit. The footnotes say they are T.E.M.S. headers and will not work with smog injection or injection heads. I need to know what is T.E.M.S. and what are injection heads and smog injection. The Truck has EFI 5.0 and a smog pump on it, am i on the right track?
The headers are hedman part #89470. Thanks for any info and help.
if you want to use it..there is a pipe that go's into the top of the header ..you will have to put in a bung or weld it in .but you will have to drill the hole in the top of the header if it didnt come all ready done. same with the o2 senser..i put headmen longs on and thats what i hade to do..
All 302 and 351w engines built after 1974 have air injection heads. The ports are at the rear of the heads and allow for fresh air injection into the heads at each exhaust port. Prior to 1974, these engines had external steel air injection manifolds as opposed to having the injection manifolds cast into the heads like the later ones. This is part of the smog injection system. The other portion of the smog injection system sends fresh air into the catalytic converter to aid the converter in reaching operating temperature. If you reference the "CATALYST" decal under the hood, there is a diagram of these components. The plumbing consists of a couple of check valves, a vacuum actuated diverter valve, and several pieces of formed hose. It would seem that the headers youa re looking at might be long tube heades that would relocate the catalytic converter and necessitate extending the injection tubing running to it. Not sure why the air injection in the heads should make any difference though. Some one here might though.
If you need i will take a pic of my 1989 bronco 351w ..and show you were i put the o2 senser and how the pipe come's down to the top of the header.. like i said i have heedman long tubes. I really like them they have good sound and just a few mod's and they were in ...what i would recomend is befor installing ..get header bolts the same size but with a allen head so you have the room to tighten them good..the other bolts are such a pain in the neck you dont have much room to put a socket on them .So thats what i did and beleive me you will be so glad you did.. good luck and if you need the pics let me know i will email them to you..
would appreciate if you could take a pic. I have an 85 bronco that
i purchased and it already had long tube headers on it and they
didn't bother to hook up the lines back to the cats. Also I can't
find any info but I don't think my bronco has an o2 sensor it is a
4bbl carb 351w. Anyway any pics you have would be greatly
appreciated.
thanks in advance.
Tim
PS the truck always runs rich and i now suspect his is why.
Thanks y'all but the headers are shorties" replacement part". According to Hedman they will work just fine. Hope the cam works out as well as i am anticipating. God I feel like a kid at x-mas waiting to open his presents.LOL
