whats the difference?

Stupid question. Whats the difference between an F100 and an F150? After all, they are both 1/2 ton. Is the F100 light duty?

From what I understand, the F150 was created in '75 or '76 as a way to get around emissions laws. The laws required that a certain weight vehicle had to have emission equipment. So the F150 was introduced, which was a F100 (with heavier springs/frame) that was just heavy enough to be over the weight restriction. But Ford kept making the F100 as a light duty.

I heard it put this way. The F100 was a 1/2 ton truck and to get around the emission problems, the F-150 was created as a 5/8 ton truck. It bought a couple of years delay in emission controls.

f-100 had a lower gvw and had to use unleaded fuel 75 on
f-150 had a highergvw and didn't have to run unleaded fuel until 78 when all "light tucks" with less than 9000lb gvw had to run unleaded fuel the f-100 line was droppeed about 81 or so
