Bought a 16 reg cab 4wd 2.7 in 16, I traded it in on a 14 crew cab z71, then traded that in on a 19 Tacoma. I tend to trade a lot. Normally I don't really miss the trucks, but ever since I got rid of the F150, Ive missed it. So tomorrow Im picking up a 19 crew cab 4wd with the 5.0.. With that said, I really did like the 2.7. The mileage went down pretty bad while towing but that truck had the *****. What am I getting into here with the 5.0? Also whats some must needed mods for the ol girl.
I had a 5.0 loaner when my 2.7eb was in for service. With the 2.7 there is a moment before your license is in jeopardy. With the 5.0, you are at risk instantly.
There are no must needed mods, they drive great from the factory. Drive that 5.0 relatively hard to break it in. The plasma coated cylinders wear in differently than the cast iron cylinder liners on the previous 5.0. You'll also want to drive the way you usually do to get the transmission to adapt to how you drive. If you baby it, it will take longer to adapt to your driving style.
Now as far as want mods, the sky is the limit. The most common seam to be leveling kits, tire and wheels, exhaust, bed mats, bed covers and so on.
You won't regret the new ford, just break it in hard like be brad said to get the rings seated properly.
For mods, since I rarely load the box up heavy I always install a 2" leveling kit to get rid of some of the rake to make the truck look better and then I put on some slightly bigger tires.
Picked up our 2019 FX-4 about 500 miles away and drove it strongly back knowing the break-in concerns. It used some oil (about a half quart between oil changes at less than 5,000 miles). And then the magic started to happen at 10,000 miles. It's due for a 5,000 mile oil change and very close to full - not far enough off to worry. Certainly don't want to over fill. And, Ford does not make it easy to add oil.
Bottom line, we have been driving and enjoying the 2019 for a year and it is just like our last new truck (2013 F-150 5.0 4x4). Problem free. Very strong trucks. Just take the time to get them broken in and check the oil in the meantime.
They ended up putting me in a loaner for now. I had them throw in a bed cover, spray in liner and tint the windows. I am curious about the leveling kit Ford offers. Also looking to put wheels and tires on it soon. It has 18's on it. Will be going to 20's. Im a fan of the "deeper" looking wheels so Im trying to figure what size I can run with out having to trim up anything...Any help on that would be great.
