I am having a real problem with a 2001 F350 with an automatic transmission and a 7.3l. While driving down the road yesterday evening the vehicle just bogged down kind of like it was down shifting at a stop and if I let off of the accelerator the truck would slowly return to drive but repeat the process. This happened around 11:00p.m. on a Friday evening 50 miles from home. Things like this never happen when you are within a short distance to a shop that could potentially help diagnose the problem. The truck has around 59,000 miles on it. Please give advise on this most frustrating of problems.
I guess I will have to wait until Monday for some help on this one. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate some help. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Well, both the dealer and a third party transmission place are telling me that the will have to tear down the transmission to determine what is wrong with it. The dealer also stated that I could buy a remanufactured transmission with an additional transmission fluid cooler for a cool $3,200 installed. Now, I don't know about you folks but that seems a bit steep considering I bought this vehicle second hand six months and haven't even put 7.000 miles on the darn thing. I will be meeting with the owner of the dealership that I bought truck from to see if we can come to some agreement as to a lower cost for replacing/repairing the transmission as the thing shouldn't have gone out on me only 7,000 miles down the road. I don't dog my vehicles, I adhere to strict maintenance and this is just beginning to get a little under my skin.
Unfortunately, if it's a well-built unit, that is not an unheard-of price for the tranny. Keep working with the dealer to see if they'll share some of the cost.
Also, be sure to let us know what, if anything, they find wrong.
Thanks NoMo, I am really just venting as to the fact that the tranny shouldn't be going out only 7,000 miles down the road from the time I bought it. No warning what so ever just boom, I'm done.
After paying 64.11 to the dealership I get the report that shows a code of F which they show as trouble shifting between 2-3 and slippage. Also they show burnt fluid. Now, I know how to check my fluid and it hasn't been run hard and was soon to be changed at 60,000 miles as that was the next interval suggested by Ford. So I guess the time has come to have someone do a rebuild on the transmission, the question is, who to do it? The transmission shop at 1/3 of the cost and a longer warranty or the dealership. Any comments regarding where to have the work done?
Well I have to give it to the dealership that I bought the truck from. They will put a remanufactured transmission in the truck with a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty and split the cost three ways. IE: Ford pays $1,000, the dealer pays $1,000 and I pay $1,000. Sounds a lot better than having to foot the bill 100% by myself. Hats off to Ford and the dealer for stepping up to the plate on this one. I will be having them install a second tranny cooler and a temp gauge while they are at it, therefore, I can keep track of the potential problems that might arise. Thank you NoMo for your response earlier.
twg, if at all possible, check with the original owner of the vehical,.. I had a similar incident with my 2000 Excursion when it hit 53K, some seal broke loose, and fluid began coming out. The dealership said they would not help at all unless I could prove that it had a regular maintanance done about 30K. Come to find out, at 30K, a totally new tranny was put in it. The TSBs say that there is a flaw with the cooling set up and suggest a updated radiator. Check the TSBs to see if yours has the same problem, you might be able to get it paid for.......
Well Xray, I have gotten the truck back and cost out of my pocket for a remanufactured transmission with a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty was a whooping $817.37. I can't get a hold of the previous owner because they live in Amarillo which is about 300 miles north of here and he was a rancher who ran the truck hard, I can't tell from the maintenance records if he had done anything with the tranny, but I can guarantee you that I will be keeping the maintenance according to the schedule while I have it. I also have ordered a heavy duty transmission cooler with an electric fan and a tranny temp gauge to monitor any drastic changes in the temp of the tranny fluid. Any way I am glad to have my truck back. Sure have missed having it to run around in.
