3rd Key-On Start
longer version, replaced underhood fuel filter, found the cavity empty, as in no fuel. Installed Blue Spring while I was there. Moved to larger filter under driver seat. Found the fuel/water separator wet with fuel. This truck has sat for about 2 years, pulled the drain plug, found it corroded and the oring damaged. Replaced plug and oring, and the filter, starts just fine now. Love the easy solutions.
I potentially have the same or similar problem as OUTATIME that he recently posted about.
Symptoms:
It takes three key on cycles to start the truck. That means, Key On, but don't crank (position 1), twice, then Key Start (crank), and it starts immediately. It runs well for a few minutes, perfect idle, then about the time it would kick into 'high idle', it starts dropping cylinders.
Background:
About 40K miles ago the EGR cooler was replaced with a stock unit by a dealer when I needed the Excursion the next morning to tow to a race.
I replaced the turbo with a stock unit a couple years ago because the variable ring thing was sticking. Then the truck was parked for a couple years when the racing stopped and it developed a cold no start issue and some pretty heavy missing in various cylinders.
Took it to a friends shop, found the FICM needed replacement, did that, it was better, but also learned it needed injectors. I was out of money for that vehicle, and parked it for a couple years.
Last weekend I replaced the injectors (see my last thread "Early or Late 04?") which was desperately needed. The white Orings were demolished in Cyl 2, 4, 6, & 8.
Received advice in that thread to check IPR screen, took it to heart, and am waiting for the socket and screen kit to arrive now. (slight aside, dealership wanted $75 for that screen kit, bought it for $23 from AccurateDiesel)
I dug out my ancient AutoEnginuity kit, and found it didn't work with any of my current laptops. That's because it's from 2010, and somewhere along the way, Windows 7-10 happened which meant the old stuff is "legacy". I've been working with the people at AutoEnginuity for a couple days patching it and loading firmware into the obsolete dongle and stuff. They've been great, amazing effort, but it's still not working...almost, but not yet. The are sending me a new dongle and upgraded the software to "good enough" to get it working. Great customer service and effort.
I swiped an android phone from my wife (Google sends them to her to test), and loaded TorquePro on it. DieselTechRon (miss you brother) has a video with config help, and now I'm able to pull data from the truck. Can't do the buzz tests, and stuff, but I can monitor. This weekend I'll have AE up and running too...
The attached screenshot from TorquePro is during the rough idle phase... Sorry about the size of the image...
