Are safety chains required with this system? Can they be attached/ detached from the ground or must you climb aboard?
How about adding air, can it be easily performed from outside the bed?

It depends on the state, I know Indiana is one that requires them. I run them for peace of mind. I do have to get in the truck to attach them, but possibly someone more coordinated than me could get them from the ground. Air is easy from the ground.

My 5th is a square nose and I have no problem towing with a short bed and the goosebox. I bought a slider when I got the 5th because "everybody" said you need it with a short bed, never needed in the 3 years I had it. Besides the weight, the slider clunks and bangs with every stop/start.

Thanks jsm180, I'm feeling more and more confident that the Goose Box is the way to go...

John

Yes, most states require safety chains for gooseneck hitches. I can install my chains while standing at the tailgate. When i installed the chain kit, I used eye bolts instead of the standard bolts, and added two more safety hooks. I connect one end to the hooks in the truck, hook up the GB, then connect the other hooks to the trailer and the breakaway switch. I only have to get into the bed once, to install the B&W ball and the chains. Everything else is done from the ground.

Another common GB mod is adding a pressure gauge to it’s much easier to inflate to the right pressure and to check pressure.

I had an Andersen hitch before the GB. I had no issues with it, but wanted the empty bed. Once I upgraded to a 450 with a long bed, the GB was an easy decision.
