So I have a 95 f-150 5.0 manual and it’s been giving me fits for a while never anything bad but I just stayed up all night reading about everything I could find on this trans and I’m gonna go look at the forks and check the plugs on the back for sure and I might just bite the bullet and rebuild it here in the next few months but I was also curious if anyone had some new forks they would be willing to measure for me so I can get some specs so I know how worn down mine our if anyone is willing I would greatly appreciate it thank you!
hard to shift into 1st from a dead stop reverse grinds like nobody’s business I’ve even had it not want to go into 2nd while at a low rpm I am never really hard on the truck for the most part but I am a younger kid with a loud manual truck so it can be hard sometimes! I read through a lot of sandys posts on it and got a lot of information from them and I’m also gonna do the shifter bushing rebuild as well also wanting to get some opinions on how far I should go with it I’m the 3rd owner of the truck have great records and documents with work done to it in the past and I have just alone put about 2k into just parts it is a solid truck so that’s why I’m considering doing the trans over and if anyone knows a good clutch brand i bought an autozone one and I’m not to impressed with it so I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions? Was considering a motorcraft one but I haven’t heard or done any research Into it so any input is also greatly appreciated!

I thought wear specs for the shift forks was an excellent question. I called Allstate Gear in San Antonio where I got my parts from. I asked them about wear specs on the forks and they said they have none and have never heard of any that would indicate replacement was necessary. Since the replacement fork cost is minimal relative to rebuilding I would think if everything is in good shape I would replace them at about 50% wear compared to a new one. I have a couple of forks that were VERY slightly used from project I had going on long ago. With a caliper the center piece of the engagement area is 7mm. The tab like ends are about 10mm. From their appearance, I would have no hesitation to use these forks so I think they may give you an indication of wear on yours. You probably read where the gurus on here say riding the shift lever with your hand accelerates fork wear.
For better help with the reverse issue you might indicate if you are 2WD or 4WD for the gurus to better help you. Sandy
It is a 4wd yeah I wanted to know just see how bad they really are and I’m hoping it can help some people in the future and I’m definitely considering just buying a junkyard trans to rebuild on because I still need a daily! Thanks for the help sandy absolutely enjoy reading some of your threads they were definitely really helpful! And I bought that shift bushing repair today as well because it was cheap and I’m gonna go home and pull that top cover off and check everything out to see how bad it really is and see how much longer I can go on it! And check those plugs on that cover as well! Any tips on what rtv to use I’m assuming just the normal black stuff will work just fine because it’s a manual trans and doesn’t get that hot or even thought about the oil resistant specific stuff as well! Any other tips are very appreciated as well!
Yes regular RTV black is what I used. Just pop the plugs and clean them up. Put a small amount on just the edges that will be inserted into the holes and use whatever it takes on the outside to seal them. If you are taking the cover off it is a great time to change fluid if it is time. You can just pour in from the top and take it till the fill plug drips. Makes it a lot easier.
If you haven't checked fluid level and you are low or empty, the rubber plugs are probably the culprit. They leak when you are driving. When you park you may see a few drops on the ground but not much. You really can't tell how bad it is leaking visually since it it blowing back when you drive. If this is the case I think you can fill it up and install the new shift kit and hopefully be fine. If you do want to rebuild one I have a pretty extensive video on how to do it. Best of luck to you and I hope it works out. Sandy
thank you for your input i will definitely let you how it goes! Should i just rebuild it anyway the input shaft had about a 1/4 inch of slop in it last year when i did the clutch i know they shouldn't have any but i was just wondering if it would be worth my time to rebuild it or move on to another vehicle!

Open it up and see what you find should help you decide the best way to proceed.

Hard to go into gear at a stop, grinding in R, hard shift to 2nd--all point to the clutch not disengaging fully when you step on the pedal. Check your clutch from the pad on the pedal through every part of it, the mount for the master, the hoses etc all the way to the throwout bearing.

+1 for clutch hydraulics first. Air in the slave, especially, got me once- it was REALLY hard to get it to bleed.
Honestly, I wouldn't take the transmission apart yet- they aren't THAT fragile if you don't beat on them, at least in my trucks.
I'd first bleed bleed bleed reverse bleed the clutch, and if you can't get it to smooth out, then probably pull it to
check the pilot bearing and slave cylinder.... they HAVE been known to mechanically wear out.
It really doesn't sound like the transmission's at fault for the engagement problem.
