302 Distributor Question

I’m removing my intake manifold and have a question about removing the distributor. I removed and numbered the plug wires, then noticed that the “1” marked on the cap had the #5 plug connected to it. The order of the remaining plugs were correct in reference to the incorrectly plugged in #5. Is the “1” on the cap there as a reference point only, or does the #1 plug have to go into the #1 terminal on the cap? Just got this truck so I don’t know what the PO did or how well it was firing back when it was running.

Somebody rewired it to compensate for stabbing it wrong. As long as the order is correct, it doesn't matter what wire's connected to the #1 position on the cap if it's stabbed wrong
