The seven year look back to get money comes from people signing everything over to their kids and then having you and me as tax payers pay for their care while they go on medicaid for NH care. I saw it happen in Nebraska where a lady with a couple of sections of irrigated land signed it over to her kids when she was in failing health. A few years later she ends up in the nursing home and the tax payer picks up the bill.

If you are 65 or older you have Medicare which is pretty good, especially with a supplemental plan but it doesn’t cover NH costs except for rehab up to 30 days. So long term care eats up a small estate unless you have private long term care insurance. Boring stuff. I guess that is why we work and save is to pay our own way as long as possible. That is the American way. Those who bitch about government run stuff shouldn’t complain about that unless they plan to take care of grandpa and grandma at home themselves.
I’ve already told my kids not to expect much inheritance if one of us ends up in a NH for a long time. And your heirs aren’t responsible for any debts.
