My turn signals and hazard blinkers suddenly stopped working last night. I did a search on this forum and noticed a few reverences to a multi function switch on the steering column. Is this the likely culprit? My first thought would be to check fuses and replace my blinker.....but I haven't had a blinker fail since.....umm, hmm.....the 80's I think. The dealer wants $80 and stocks 15 to 20 at all times. Must be a hot item. Should I part with the cash and buy the part? Or is there something else I should try first. (I already checked all the fuses)
Sometimes if the MFS is the culprit you can tell by slipping the 4 way flasher switch up and down, wiggling it while you do so. If you see it come back to life to some degree then replace the switch for sure. If its the late model style Super Duty F250, they have a bad habit of blowing the flasher relay, which is located under the radio area behind the dash. I just pull the radio and reach down there and pull it out. Its blue in color.
I tried wiggling the switch, but didn't see anything happening. Should I replace the flasher before I buy a multi function switch? How does the radio come out? Is it pretty easy to remove?
On a super Duty I would change the flasher first. You need a pair of radio puller tools. They are commonly avaliable at Auto Zone type stores. Just insert them and push outward on the pullers while pulling out the radio chasis.
Thanks for the comments anyway....but I have it fixed, but still don't know what's wrong. Here's the scoop....you see if you can figure this out.
I'm driving back from LA and my turn signals stop working just outside Tucson AZ. I live here, so I just drive home and park for the night. The next morning I check my fuses with a 12v tester (the ice pick type with a ground wire and light in the handle). All the fuses either had power at both ends of the fuse or no power at either end....but none had power at one end and not the other. So, I moved onto checking other things. This is what led me to the Multi Position Switch idea.
So, I purchase the switch, get home and swap it out. (took about 5 minutes). Turn signals and hazards and brakelights still aren't working. Hmmm? So, I get under the dash and check the fuses again. This time I do find a bad fuse, it's #13 and I replace it...but nothing works still. This morning I take it to the Quality Care service center. They call me several hours later to say it's all ready for pickup. I get there and the tech tells me that the #1 fuse was missing! Not blown, just missing. He inserted a fuse and everything worked! Could not find a reason for the #13 fuse blowing yesterday, but checked it out today and it's still good. I did not have a chart that told me what fuse was for what function, so the service tech printed one out for me. The #1 fuse is for the flasher relay. Explains why the turn signals and hazards don't work....but doesn't explain why my brake lights failed also. The #13 fuse is for the Brake Pedal Position Sensor, he says I shouldn't be able to get the truck out of park when that fuse is blown, but that was not the case. I was able to drive it with that fuse blown.
I have no clue what happened to fuse #1. I never pulled any fuses other than the bad one in #13. I looked on my floorboard and under the dash for any fuses that may have fallen out. Weird and strange! My turn signals worked when I left Los Angeles and failed while I was driving! Could the fuse have fallen out while I was driving? And if so, wouldn't it still be somewhere in the cab?
I don't know...I'm going to loose sleep over this one.
Anyway, I just wanted to post this update. Thanks again for the helpful comments.
