recently replaced tank selector valve,,metal lines after valve,,mechanical fuel pump,,metal line from pump to filter head...blew out lines from filter head back,,but still getting laggy performance and fuel filter light keeps coming on,,brand new motorcraft filter/serarator,, could me jumping up a size on the metal lines be the issue? not sure of original size but the 3/8 line i used was bigger id than original
Fuel Supply lines are 3/8 ID and Return lines are 5/16 ... so I don't see your line size as a problem.....
one thing you could try is bypass the FTSV on the Supply side and IF you still have the problem then maybe your tank sending Assemblies have some clogging ... some had filter screens that can plug up too.
the plugged filter light coming on says that the Transfer pump inside the Injection pump is working well.... as it is making a Vacuum on the filter head.....
ok we assume this is all good .... but to be sure you can install a Fuel Pressure Gauge on the schrader valve....
this will tell you IF in fact the filter is being starved... duct tape it to the windshield ... remove the Tire Valve stem from the schrader valve and use a clamp to install the gauge.
you may have to get a long enough hose to install it so you can see the gauge while driving.
wish i would have tried that today.had to switch out a cheap ftsv for a used working pollak off ebay..took yet another diesel bath..did blow air from filterhead toward tank with ease,,the thing that drives me crazy is if you put finger on steel line on o/f side of pump while cranking it sucks..sucks then blows,,why does it seem backwards?this is the second mech pump in 2 months doing the same thing..i appreciate the input lonewolf
ya that is weird as the mechanical pump has 2 check valves in it..... But if crud gets under a valve and it sticks open it will do what you are seeing..
where would them filter screens be located? i know about the strainer on the bottom of the fuel pickup,,i did blow air from metal lines towards tank with cap off..seemed fine..but i guess it has to be a clog .,,this is the second NEW mech fuel pump i put on,,and still same problem,,no leaks in fuel system that i know of,,i checked ftsv while running and at rest no fuel evident anywhere..or elsewhwere also.i guess i will drop tanks to inspect fuel pickups,,i dont think 2 new pumps would be bad,,soo fustrating for a rather simple fuel system,,
lonewolf,,my FTSV has 2 ports on top,2 ports on bottom, and 2 ports on the end of valve towards rear tank..4 have 90 s and 2 are straight,,so kind of hard to mess the connections up..update,,blew air from both ends and everything is clear and unobstructed,,ftsv does work,,my only guess is mechanical pump,,primed up to filter assy. starts then quits after fuel in filter assy. is used up, i am thinking of putting an electrical lift pump on and bypassing the mech. pump,,any thoughts on that?plus i dont see how the mech pump could be installed wrong,,when running the little port on the side of pump has vaccum ..so i assume it is being activated by lobe on crank,,still unsure of anything at this point..i appreciate your input sir
you said you got a Pollak Valve ... that is what I posted....
the OEM style plumbs like this image.... it is different than Pollak... so that was why I was asking.
But it do sound like the Mechanical pump is the problem ... IF the FTSV is installed right and working.
what can happen is the Mechanical pumps are sometimes hard to install.... the trick is set the Engine on TDC Compression stroke and the Cam lobe it at the highest point allowing the Pump arm to be easily installed.
I run an old rebuidable Carter Mechanical pump and very seldom have issues with it. ... folks that want to use the electrical have been advised here to use the Facet Dura Lift pump.
I heard in conversation once (aka probably worthless input) that the cam lobe was worn down causing the mechanical pump to not work well. Just what occurred to me if you've replaced pump and can't find any other solutions, maybe worth a flashlight eyeball check to see if you can get eyes on it with the pump out while you turn it over by hand. Might need a complex array of mirrors to accomplish the task.
yes sir i have looked inside at the lobe with my 15$$ lizard cam.. then put a screwdriver lightly on lobe to see if i could feel any worn spots on it but seemed smooth ..being a millwright i deal with a lot of worn shafts ect..so nothing seemed out of the ordinary..i guess i just have to re try the mech pump again
