On my '90 F250 4x4, there is a warning light for the rear anti-lock brakes. You only see it illuminated briefly during startup with all the other warning lamps. I was wondering why it exsists? What purpose does it serve?
I would suppose it's to tell you how to use your brakes. With the anti-locks, you're not supposed to pump the brakes, just apply pressure.
If the light is on, you have standard brakes, which, in the case of skidding on a slippery surface, you may have to pump them to keep from locking up.
Plus it tells you that there may be an expensive repair ahead. When I purchased my '94 van a few months ago, the light was on. The selling dealer (Chev.) had it repaired at the Ford dealer at a cost of almost $900 for 2 rebuilt valves and labor.
If it comes on briefly with the other warning lights during initial startup, and then shuts off, then it is working correctly. If it stays on, then it is telling you that there is a problem with the anti-lock portion of your braking system.
