Whenever I start to accelerate, my engine knocks pretty loud. It only knocks when i first start to drive, it stops after the engine warms up. I am using the correct grade of gas but i dont know if the distrib is correctly set.
Its a mechanical knock and has been occuring since ive owned it. Im running Mobil 1 Synthetic, the oil levels fine and runs great accept for the knocking. Ive heard that Rislone frees stuck lifters, maybe that might help.
if that motor was originally running on regular oil and not synthetics that could be your problem. Your not supposed to change oil type during its life like that. I would run either some 10/40 for 20/50 havoline to see if that clears it up.
Its had synthetic running in it since the day it was bought. It only does it on startup when the engine is cold. It disappears when the engine is warm, though there could be a very very slight knocking, its hard to tell. Ive read that the Restore Engine stuff that seals the scrapes in the cylinder walls can cause it to knock, anyone else heard that? I will try to listen around for the knock with our mechanics stethoscope and try the plug wires tomorrow. ill let yall know what i finds. thanks!!
If the noise is there when cold and goes away when it warm up, it's possible it is a piston slap from a collapsed piston. It's the only noise I know that goes away when warmed up.

I recently read something on this I think the problem is the synthetic oil. I saw where synthetic oil actually will cuase the valve train in some cases to make noise more so than usual and in a few cases when cold as you metioned Kemicalburns menitoned this. You might consider running some good old fashioned dinosaur oil in it for a while and see if it goes away and if it does then its the oil switch it back and be content that nothing should be wrong. I think TMI meant lifters not pistons otherwise I had a hard time visualizing that one. later
A collapsed piston is when the skirt area of a piston actually shrinks and gives more clearence than should be. If you mic a collapsed piston it gets small near the tip of the skirt at the bottom where it is usually larger. That's why it is noisy when cold and when the aluminum heat up it gets quieter. Like I said it's the only noise I've heard that gets quieter the warmer it gets.
hmm, i never thought of the oil being the problem. I dont want to change the oil, i just changed it last month. maybe next time i will use regular oil. Is it just that the syn oil is more slippery or is it the actual make up of the oil?
