Go easy on the new guy. I'm not much of a gearhead, so I come to you for advice. I have a 1995 F150 Supercab 4x2 work truck which I use for my contracting business. I have grown tired of its tendency to become a "one wheel drive" truck as soon as the road gets slippery. The last straw was the other day when I had to be pulled out of someone's back yard recently. If it were spinning both back wheels(with new aggressive mud and snow tires on them) it would have gotten out fine. So I got to thinking I may be a candidate for posi-rear. I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE THINKING - "GET a 4x4!!" . I wish I could. I think I'll have classic tags on this beast before I can afford to replace this PAID OFF beast. It's very reliable, so I think I'll keep it running.
My fear is that I'll go to some garage, and I'll get ripped off, or steered in the wrong direction. Any advice on how to go about this? Are there any reasons not to do it?
Go to the junkyard and grab a posi unit from there. Most mustang GT's had them. It shouldn't be more than a few hundred to have it inspected and installed on your truck. MAybe a few hundred. There are many different ways to get posi. A locker might not be your best bet as they are kinda rough on the corners. Pickup a 4X4 magazine and look through the ads and you will see all the different types. They range from $220 - $450.
Can't use a mustang's because it's a 28 splined unit...you need a 31 splined unit. Check out ebay, ford's unit is called a "traction lok" and you can buy one for cheap on there. They are fairly easy to install, but you said your not a gearhead so you might want to take it to a shop. I payed 50 bucks for my traction lok on ebay, and they have rebuild kits that are about 60 bucks so you'll get new clutches in it. I would say it would take about 2 hrs of labor, so it shouldn't be much money to install, shop around.
a power trax locker in it. Its supposed to replace your spider gears, can be done with basic hand tools and takes about and hour. I'm putting one in monday or tuesday in a Dana 60 rear. Cant wait to have both wheels moving instead of just one.
hey i was reading this and my 79 f250 4x4 has a dana 60 in the rear. so your saying that i could get this traction lock for under a hundred dollars and have posi? my budy bout a eatin posi unit for 500 , just doesn't seem so esy that i xcould get this tracton loc for under a hundred dollars. i need some info on this one. thanks
If you put a positraction like the factory limited slip in you will have to have the gears changed and the bearings, then all the setup will have to be done again. If you go the powertrax drop in locker you don't have to do any of that stuff. The average backyard mechanic can install on in a good day of work easily. You don't have to have any special tools or new bearings or any of that other setup stuff. You just replace the spider gears with the locker. It costs about 250.00 or so and some gear oil and you are done. As for driveability it's not that bad in a fullsize. In a worktruck I don't think you will even know or care.
