I had this is engine section of forum, but I don't see much traffic there.
Folks, I have 2006 F-250 SD with 5.4 3V 165K, runs perfect, well maintained, no issues, I run only Mobil-1 HM, every 5k/change. I saw video in forum a while ago of an Excursion with gernaded 5.4 3V engine. Mechanic said it was common for #5 cyl rocker to bind and fail. He also said that a tic-tic from that area is sign of a problem.
I do hear slight ticking from passengers side bank. Is this a concern? Is ANY tic-tic bad, or only severe rapping?
What is involved with changing out rockers? Est. hours with competent skills and ample tools? Are any special tools required (ex. spark plug job)?
Yes, I'll use only MC parts.
While in there, should I go after any other truck-love work?
That's the first I've heard of a known rocker issue. Is 2006 a 3V or is it still a 2V? I know with the 2V 4.6/5.4s noisy injectors were a thing. My 06 crown vic has them. I was chasing a slight top end tick/knock for quite awhile before I read about it. It's hard to hear under the hood, but inside the car there a constant low frequency tap tap tap coming from about the top of the dashboard whenever it's running. It shouldn't be that hard to pull a rocker cover and check things out, except IDK what you'd be looking for. Signs of excessive or abnormal wear on that rocker, maybe?
Yes, that's the video I saw. I mistakenly wrote Excursion instead of Navigator. I'd like to properly diagnose and remedy as needed. Later today, I'll try to record video of tic-tic I'm worried about.
So has anyone changed out rockers on a 3V? Is it a normal mid-to-high mileage maintenance item?
At 165k, I think you'd be smart to replace the timing chains, tensioners, cam phasers, roller rockers and upgrade to the high volume Melling oil pump....if you intend on keeping the truck for a while anyway.
This isn't real difficult work, there are YouTube videos on how to do it all.
