I cannot get the nut off or even loose on the downpipe clamp on my 2000 7.3 f350. Ive hosed it down with a lot of WD40. I just can't get it loose. Is there any other way to get the downpipe off? I don't have another clamp so non destructive methods are welcome.
First off get a new clamp so if all else fails or it breaks you are ready. If it's original it may not be reusable even if you get it off.
Heat is your friend. Heat the nut cherry red 3 times letting it cool off to a normal black color, on the last cycle use plenty of penetrating oil and stop using WD40, it stands for Water Displacing Formula 40. Buy some real penetrant such as Kroil, Knocker Loose, Liquid Wrench and as a last ditch use Dot 3 brake fluid. I have also seen and used an old mechanic trick with a torch and bees wax, heat the bolt and nut to cherry red and as soon as you take the heat off touch the end of the bolt with the wax and it will creep into the threads. Just remember that all of these may very well not work and you could still break the bolt.
