We are sneaking up on "Daylight Savings Time" again. I believe it changes the last Sunday in October. I understand why and how it originally got started, but I'm puzzled as to why we still do it. I have never met anyone that likes it or thinks it's a good thing. For me, it officially puts an end to most evening chores and signals the migration to "indoor" activities. It's kind of depressing to loose the evening daylight.
I had to vote for no. When I was over in Iraq/Kuwait earlier this year, I was amazed at how the sun was rising at around 4:00 a.m. They don't use that savings time over there. I thought to myself,"Self, how much stuff could you get done around the house with the sun rising at 4:00 a.m. That would be great!" I'm all for it. Even though you'd probably have days of long darkness, due to the rotation of the earth, it would still help out for about half the year. Not much work outside in the winter anyway. I wouldn't miss it.
I vote that Standard time become the time we're in right now and DLST is one hour ahead of that. I could care less if the sun is up when I go to work, but I darn sure would like a lot more light when I get home.
Here in Arizona we don't do daylight savings time...we never change our clocks. The only exception is some of the Indian reservations change their times...but not most of the state of AZ. I love it...no having to get up an hour earlier or later when time changes.
Here's what I don't get about all the posts so far.
If you hadn't switched to DLST, it would ALREADY be dark in the evening because you'd be on standard time. You wouldn't have got to enjoy the evening light for the last month.
The switch to DLST is great in the spring, it gives you an extra hour of the day and really prolongs your evenings in the summer. I'd glady trade a whole summer worth of 1 hour longer evenings for a couple week period in the fall where the change actually affects daylight. In less than two weeks, the the sun will be down after 4:30-5 regardless what time you're on.
As for it affecting sleep patterns, routines, cattle, etc... BIG DEAL. It might take what, a week at the most to readjust. Seems like a small sacrifice to me.
Waxy is right on this one...the period we are in now is DLST. I love it having light until almost 9:00pm in the summer. I only wish it would stay this way. I could not care less if it's light or dark in the mornings; but I like to get things done in the evenings.

That must suck for anyone that's got to travel across the state border to go to work ! Or what if you need to go to a parts store across the border that closes at 9:00pm, and it's only 8:00pm where you are ? You're too late! It's closed already !!
I'm sure it must be nice, but it seems like it could also work against ya.
I'd like to live on the equaTer where it's stable. I talked to a guy from Equador and he said it was always the same as far as light went. It was just hot and muggy in the summer, hot, muggy and rainy in the winter.
i vote we get rid of TIME all togather. who needs a clock ? just think about it, no more alarm going off at 5 am so you can get ready drive to work and punch in at a TIME clock which shows you to be 2 MINUTES late to work, then they call you onto the carpet so they can nag at you for 10 MINUTES about losing two MINUTES of work. then the long day waiting for the clock to say quitting TIME just so you can drive home in rush HOUR traffic cause everyone and their brother gets off at the same TIME you do, then the wife tells you it is TIME to go get the kids from wherever but to make sure your home in TIME for this and save some TIME on the weekend so you can do the honeydoo list and you never get the TIME to change that annoying exhaust leaking manifold that is driving you crazy listening to it all the TIME. Then it's bed TIME again because you have to get up at a certain TIME so you dont be two MINUTES late again so you dont have to waste TIME listening to your boss whine all the TIME.
so lets get rid of it, get up when you wake up, go to work when your ready to go,leave when you want to leave, and do whatever else you want to do cause there is all kinds of TIME
