I have a 1996 F-150.Has 124,000 miles on all original parts. Has this creak from underneath though. Not matching body sway, but steering inputs, and especially when steering/braking, ie turning into a parking spaces, it is loudest then. Have kept it looking virtually new, but this makes it sound like a wore out thing. My front end shop saw no obvious problems. It was serviced for this a looooong time ago under warranty....but over time it is back and much louder. Are there things to lube in the chassis I have neglected?? Not squeaks..but CREAKS, loud ones.I dunno!! Thanx in advance for any info.
My father's '95 F-150 does the exact same thing. Found out the rivets that hold crossmembers in place have loosened ever-so slightly allowing the crossmembers to move enough to cause the noises you hear. I hope this helps.
Its possible the transmission crossmember bolts may have worked loose or the trans mount itself , I found one of mine loose about a yr ago . It could also be the radius arm bushings worn causing the noise .
I don't believe you can re-tighten the rivets unless you have a high dollar rivet gun(like the Ford factory has). Take a close look at the joints that are held together by rivets, if there is a ring of surface rust around the rivet(s) those are the ones that are loose, same goes for the bolt & nut type of application. Since you may not be able to fix loose rivets I'd spot weld the suspect areas if room permits and see if noise ceases, then I would re-check to see if welds hold. I hope this helps in any way.
My 92 did the same thing i replaced the rivits with grade 8 bolts and havent had a problem .But be sure to check all of your suspension parts, sound travels and it may be somthing your over looking.
Trouble
My truck is a freaken creaken machine, it never seems to stop groaning and complaining whenever I turn the wheel, it also happens when applying the brake before a stop light, I just had my transmission replaced and I am extremely worried that it might be that, because before then it NEVER made a noise, EVER.
kevint, try retorquing all the tranny crossmember bolts. I believe there are six per side. I've seen it where shops will forget one or three, or not torque them enough.
