I’m going to put some air bags on my 1994.5 F-250. The truck used to have a 5th wheel hitch and when it was installed, the mounting tabs were welded to the frame. What would be the best course of action to get those tabs off? They are in the way of the brackets for the bags. (Torch or Grinder?)
I posted this in the diesel forum as well.
If you have access to a high speed grinder with a decent cutoff wheel, that's what I'd go with - less heat under the truck! Sure, there's sparks. but nothing like an Acet/Oxy torch!!! Just my opinion... I have both at home!
Pickled,
Some of the cutoff tool bits used on the vibratory type of hand held tools work fairly well. That might be a workable option for the tight quarters under the truck bed. There won't be many (if any) sparks.
Ken
Thanks guys.
The bags are supposed to be delivered today and I am having a buddy help me tomorrow. Together we have access to torch, grinders, sawsall etc.
Once we see how much room we need to clear the brackets, a command decision will be made. 😊 I’ll report back.
From what research I have done, around 1psi per 50 pounds of added weight. I’ll try that (should be about 50 psi) and see if it levels me out. I don’t mind a tiny bit of squat.
Late to the party. My Air Spring Load Lifter 5000 brackets came pre drilled with two different mount hole combinations and shims for just that reason...a work around for the 5th wheel / goose neck bracket.
Ended up using a die grinder. Came right off, I think I’m glad whoever put them on was kind of a crappy welder. 😆
Got the bags on and aired them up, WOW!! What a huge difference. Love em!
I did see the shims on the kit, but decided to knock the tabs off for a little cleaner look.
