I got a stock 390 as far as I know, it's got one of those old 480cfm autolite four barrels on it with the auto choke.
IN the last while, every so often when I start the thing after driving it some where it sounds horrible at idle and I have to hold the gas down and crank awhile to start it.... 1 minute later it idles just fine. 80% of the time it just turns right over and idles fine. This little glitch is most likely to happen after hard drives or low rpm cruising, some times it'll show it's face while driving if I stop and let it idle.... drive some more and it's gone.
Is the auto choke messing around?? or is this a carb heat issue? I don't have the cardboard gasket under the carb, I had to use a spacer-manifold gasket because it's thinness allows me to bolt the carb on... Could this be my problem?
Sounds like a touch of vapor lock to me. Get one of the thick ( 1/4 ") spacer/insulator ( fiber)gaskets. That's what i had to use under the 4 bbl on my 68 Merc when I swapped to a 428PI intake, to clear the hood.
I'll take your word on that, funny thing is the 65 4v intake's mounting bolts will not accomodate the extra height added. Ohwell I gotta resurface the spacer it's kinda funny shaped. I'll hit'em both up when I get on it, maybe then it'll fit.
