Small Ring ID

I'm rebuilding a stock 351W. I found this piece in the oil pan. It looks like a ring that broke off. I'd like help to identify this.

Not all engines used pin keepers, but if it was, there should be a bad place in the cyl. might be something that was dropped in the last time the engine was worked on.

If it came out, it would be in pieces after chewing up the cylinder wall and piston as you note.

Hard to imagine how it could end up in the pan via careless dropping. When you install pistons, the pan is off. Maybe dropped and "hiding" somewhere during assembly.

Another mystery perhaps.

Might be too small for the keeper from the looks of it. Besides, there doesn't seem to be any damage whatsover to the cylinders.
Could it be some sort of retainer from the oil pump drive shaft? It's roughly that size, maybe slightly larger.

I think that's a bingo. Makes sense.

Small block Fords had pressed in piston pins. Only the FE series had floating pins with retainers and that's not one of those

This is likely what it's from. I did change the fuel pump at some point last year. I can't see it missing from anywhere else. Thanks for the help!
