Will i get screwed

Hey guys,
I went to look at this bed in a salvage yard and the guy told me he knew a man who did good body work for cheap and that i should talk to him instead of buying a bed. I finally got ahold of him and went down there. I have a decent sized dent in the bedsie, some rust on the fenderwellls, about a 4inch diameter dent in the cabcorner and a few dings. He said he would do all the body work and paint it for $800. I wouldnt consider it if this was a body shop cause that would be to cheap in my opinion but this is an OLD man working out of his home so i thought it might be different. hesaid he uses enamel paint with a hardener in it. I am not looking for show quality paint job but i want it to last for a while. What do yall think? Will I get screwed if i do this? I plan to ask if Ican see some of his other work. Are there any other questions i should ask him? Sorry for the long post.
Thanks
David

It sounds like it may be a good deal depending on how he fixes the rust. Is he going to cut out the bad metal and weld new metal back in?

Hey, OLD is a relative term. I bet you would consider me old (notice the no caps) and I would call the OLD guy, mature. But then, maybe I'm OLD and your OLD guy would be old to me.

If he is cutting out rust and patching in new metal, along with fixing dents and painting, $800 is a real good deal.

Most body shops won't touch rust so your options are fairly limited. You need to find out how he plans to fix the problems.

If he plans on covering a rust-out with some fiberglass and filling those dents with buckets of Bondo, you need to look elsewhere. It will only be a matter of time until the rust reappears and the Bondo pops out.

My brother-in-law and I are retired and do just what this OLD guy does. If you came to us, we would say something similar to, "It's cost you $32.50/hour plus materials. Since we are retired, don't expect it to be done tomorrow. If you can't work with that, perhaps you should go somewhere else." For our work, you could expect the rust (assuming it has rusted though) to be cut out and new metal patched in. All dents would be worked so no more than 1/8" of filler would be used. I don't believe in acrylic enamel but if that what you wanted to pay for, that is what you would get.

Thanks guys i appreciate the responses. I merely emphazised that he was older idsay 70's-80's. So maybe thats young to a few of you i dont know. any way i will talk to him again. Should I ask him if he warranties his work or just leave that alone. I figured it cant hurt to ask.
THanks
Again

How he goes about fixing the rust is the main thing I would be concerned about.

THe paint on the truck is peeling in places. Should i ask if he is going to strip all the paint or is stripping it unnecessary?
THanks Guys you've been a great help.

It actually depends. If you can sand to good paint, then stripping isn't a requirement. That's assuming of course, it doesn't have multiple layers of paint.

Well he said he will cut the rust out and put in new metal. And he will sand the old paint but not strip it. I think I am going to have him do it. I'll post pics when I get it back. Thanks very much for all the input guys. It's greatly appreciated.
David

P.S. Aekisu, what if it does have more than one layer of paint? I am not sure if it does or not.
