Hi y'all. New account but use the site frequently. I'm on here to ask if anyone has swapped an AMC 258 into a bII or any other i6. The stock 2.8 has so many problems so I'm jus going to get rid of it. The problem is with me being in Cali, the laws here are stupid so I have to get an engine out of a vehicle of the same gvwr which is what led me to the 258 out of a cj7. So did anyone have any clearance issues in their swap? And if so, what did you do to fix them
I know you were in the Introductions, but you kinda jumped right into the meat and potatoes of an engine swap.
What year is the 258?
Why are you wanting to cross pollinate here, when you could easily get a 2.8 or move up to a 2.9? (4.0 or 5.0 V8 swaps are going to be similar to the 258 in troubles)
You have to meet the smog requirements of whichever is newer--the engine or the vehicle. Which means you will have to bring all the engine electrical and cat, possibly the evap etc over with the 258.
Plus that 258 is a long fellow compared to the 2.8, and you'll have to bring a transmission with it as well.
I want to cross pollinate cuz the 2.9 has its own share of problems and using the 258 instead of a 4.0 or 5.0 will make paperwork just that much easier. And on top of that, there is a big following for those engines and honestly I'm not all that big of a fan of Ford's powertrains
Well get the tape measure out. Looks like it's 32" from the bellhousing to the crank damper. We had a Cherokee with the 4.0 (same external dimensions) and it was a little tight in there.
Someone here tried a 300 Ford in a BII or Ranger--never did hear the end of that as he was going to move the radiator to the bed or do two smaller radiators.
