My search skills could not find anything on this. I don't run with a front plate and I'm wondering if I should install a screen to protect the fins of the radiators that are behind the big opening in the bumper?
Pro tip, remove the top plastic cover(a whole bunch of push pins) under the hood and drape a large piece of PLASTIC bug screen all down the front of all the coolers. This will catch bugs and rocks, stiff will fall off, and it will protect it front rock dings and damage as well as plugging up coolers and making them less and less efficient. Then, depending on your driving, I have also added a all season front which does include a stainless steel "grate" in that opening. It is in my opinion a major potential for damage to the lower part of coolers. Mine has been on since winter 2017. We have so much rock and sand on the roads. Bug season also very bad.
Screens must be way more robust where y'all live. Down here, a screen is not going to do anything with a rock kicked back at you from a truck going down the highway at 80MPH when you too are moving at that speed. I suggest coronavirus masks at the opening. For some reason, those stop everything.
On my '11 I held a 2' by 4' (IIRC) piece of expanded steel behind the grill with gigantic zip-ties. After it was in I didn't happen to tow in particularly high temperatures and had no noticeable effect in engine cooling. My intention was to keep gravel from bending the aluminum fins and I regarded it as a success. Note: the expanded steel required paint and I used a spray on plasticy (sp!) coating (whose name I can not remember) and was satisfied with the condition of the radiator 6 years and 80K miles later.
I've had my '17 1½ years now and my ham radio isn't completely installed and the radiator protection is not yet started.
I didn’t like the big gaps on my 2018 Limited grille. I was looking to put some cloud rider stainless steel inserts to stop the rocks but an assistant of mine had a better idea. Throw in some cheaper light bars to help close the gap. That’s what I would do in the opening you have on your 20. Won’t be full coverage but it will limit the potential for debris.
The cloud rider inserts weren’t available for a limited back when I inquired and the sets available for the lower model grilles were ridiculously expensive.
If you don’t want to go the light bar route, get some metal screen from any home improvement store. You can get it in black and make it work somehow.
