No idle when cold

No idle when cold

On my 1999 Expedition with 5.4 motor, the engine will not idle when cold. I can keep it running by pressing the accelerator, but will not idle on its own until it is at temperature. No lights are on in the dash and the scanner shows no error codes. I would appreciate any suggestions. I have already replaced the air charge temp sensor.

This is a very common problem. The Idle Air Control valve on the engine is either dirty or defective. As the name implies, this device regulates airflow into the engine during idle. Pressing the accelerator overrides this system, which is why the vehicle will idle and run while the pedal is pressed. Some individuals have had success cleaning this device, but replacement is a more permanent solution. You may wish to refer to the link below for more information.

Thanks Paul. I hate these electrical problems!! On a side note, I am a newbie to this site but have used several others for other cars. This site is by far the best. Great info without all the wise cracks.
