Question whistling

I"m not sure if this is the right forum, but I have a question i hope someone can help with. we own a 98 explorer 4.0L sohc awd. The heat manifold is loose and needs to be re-welded but we have been told as long as we don't mind a little racket it's fine. So i don't think that's the problem. The car starts and as soon as we drive it makes a loud squeeking noise like something doesn't have enough oil. Then it calms down after 1 minute and becomes a very low whistle. If you had the windows up or the radio on, you may not even hear the whistle. But the squeeking is definitely noticeable. We are about to embark on a 1700 mile road trip. Is this something to really worry about. We had a 60,000 mile check up which was good all around about 2500 miles ago.

Welcome to FTE!

That could be the problem, but my first thought would either be a loose vaccum line, or a manifold or head gasket leak. I am not as familiar with some of the guys here, so hopefully they will chime in and talk more about the gasket leak that is common on the 4.0's...

Kaviti, is it a squeek or a whistle? One quick test is to remove the serpentine belt and start it up. If the squeek stops, it's from a bearing (alternator, water pump, idler pully, etc). If the noise continues, then it's a vacuum leak, IAC valve, etc.......

Don't run the engine for more than a few seconds with the belt off.

It is both....it squeeks for the first minute....literally sounds like something is trying to turn with no oil. But after a minute or two the squeeking goes away and the whistling starts and continues.

Is this something to fix before the road trip...or can it be taken care of at our destination.

My '94 4.0 sounds like the cat was sleeping under the hood when it first starts up. After a little will it drops to a not so noticable squeek. I spent a while trying to track it down as i figured it was either a bearing or a belt. Turned out to be the exhaust hangers bushing have glazed over and it's caused by the hangers sliding back and forth with the engine vibration. That discovery dropped it on my priority list so I'm still listening to it.

Had some pull in next to me in a parking lot with the same model and it sounded just the same! That driver wasn't to concerned either.
