From looking at pictures, it looks like the main hookup cable for the head is a cat cable. The data connector looks like a round connector, its a second cable.
Panel and main unit are connected via a modular (RJxx type connector), most likely an RJ45. Might try using some ferrite cores on the CAT cable, as inexpensive insurance against interference, if it's a longer cable run.
Im sure someone on the ARRL forums can tell you the specs for this cable, and whether its an issue to extend it. From the looks, it may be an old PS-2 style serial cable, like our keyboards and mice usta use.
Yes, time will tell. I had to check my laptop to see if it still had a serial port when I first was reading up on the Kenwood, it does!

Just ensure any cables you buy have conductors for the pins your radio or other application requires.
ETA: Looks like Kenwood is using all pins.
Yes, how long the extension if available or how long the original cable is will all play into it.
I will post a new thread when I start to put it all together, not too many posts about radio installs around here.
Homemade bracket attached to a fender bolt with a bottom loaded whip antennae, coaxial cable run through a grommet in front of the drivers seat hooked up to Cobra 75 WX ST near the back of the seat, with the mike wire run between the seat and console.
I used a front receiver to mount my antenna. Inside I mounted the CB just under the start button. President Bill CB, very small I made a step to get under the hood easier and mounted my CB antenna off to the side.
I like the professionally fabbed, custom designed hood mounts. Look good, fit correctly, and work well. I've used on other Fords. Here is one example. I don't have this, as I can't find a decent spot for my Cobra 29 LX right now (and I'm not a fan of the center console mount).
