I'm replacing the radius arm bushings in my explorer by way of removing the rivets in the bracket. After I gound off the head of the rivets, I was having trouble punching out the rivet. I finally went to Homers Depot and got myself a new punch. For $3, I got a 3/8 inch steel rod. It's 2 feet long, so it comes way out of the wheel well. Now I've got all kinds of room to swing a 3 lb hammer. 2 taps and the rivet was laying on the garage floor.
Originally posted by Sberry27 We do that to change them too, usually use punch in air chisel after grinding them off.
I didn't mention it in the original post, but a punch in an air chisel didn't work. I tried the biggest nail set that I had, but there wasn't any room to swing a hammer....A 2 foot punch gave me lots of room!
You have to grind the end of the punch down just a bit as most are .401 shank and they are just a little big to drive the rivets. I just dress the end a little but your rod idea is good too. Yes Airbrush, Thats probably me,,, ha Are you using the same name in welding, sounds familiar. You go to the Hobart site? Thats one of the best on the net, they have some wire wizzards on there, have picked up a lot of tech stuff from them. Dan and Scott and a few others make quite a study out of small wire feeders.
I go to the Hobart site, AWS and some others but I never post. I like the stuff you post, as well as a few others. Nice shop BTW. It's good to see some pros around and I like this site too.
