Unhappy hard starting 5.4

Have an '01 F250 with the 5.4...
It sometimes takes 3 or 4 tries to get it started
and when it does,it will not idle below 1300 rpm's
My local dealer has had it numerous times, but cannot solve the issue because it does not leave
an error code....
I have replaced the MAF and the crank sensor at
a local mechanics suggestion...but still have the problem...
Have even driven fior 3 days with an ODB hooked up to it,but still no codes, even when it is screwing up!!
I feel I am chasing a ghost..I have lost trust that
it will always start (I have been stranded several
times, but it eventually started the next day)
I am told the O2 sensors check O.K as does the cam sensor...Help!!

Hi and welcome to FTE

Sorry to hear about your problem.
You might try cleaning the IAC (Idle Air Control) that is on the throttlebody. It could be sticking and not opening or closing properly.

I'd be willing to bet it's the IAC. When you start it up, do you have to play with the gas to keep it alive? Does it just sputter and stall out if you let it run? Here's a picture:

The item surrounded in yellow is what you're looking at - Idle Air Control Valve. The black line in there just shows where it connects to the manifold. There's 2 bolts that hold it in. You can try cleaning it, but usually when it starts failing, cleaning only buys you 2 more weeks or so. A new one should be $65 or so. Ford improved the design on the new one, so they won't look 100% alike, but it works.

Let us know how it turns out.

Hey guys,
I can keep it running over 1300 rpm's..
If I let it try to idle on its own..it will die to 300..run a few minutes
then dies...
Then..it will either not start for several tries after,or will startup
and run perfect for the next week!!
I have since found that it will start always with the throttle
half open...but runs very rough and strong smell of gas as if choke is stuck...it will usually smooth out after 2-3 minutes...
By the way..the truck has 50,000 highway miles on it..
I am surprised to hear people say to change o2 sensors at this
mileage....

You might try cleaning the mass-air sensor. It may be dirty. It sounds like it is trying to flood itself out for some reason.
