HELP: alternator question 2004 V6

Yesterday, I started removing the alternator on my 2004 V6. I broke the small plastic shield that covers the left side of the alternator (to the left if you're facing the alternator looking through the wheelwell). Is this shield important? Or can I just leave it out? Thanks.:

Well, you probably CAN leave it out, but Ford put it there for a reason. It's my opinion that it needs to be put back on. Now if Ford no longer sells it and you don't have a source for a replacement, I guess that's a different matter.
BTW, I replaced the alternator in my daughter's 2003 AWD V6 about a year ago. The alternator on her Escape failed right at 100K miles. Yet, I have a 1997 F250 with 250K+ miles that has the original alternator, go figure!
After looking at everything, I replaced my alternator out the side by pulling an axle. Are you are replacing yours by bringing it through the top?
Anyway, good luck on your alternator replacement.

Mine broke too and I remember a couple of people saying their's didn't have it when they went to replace it originally.

Thanks for your replies.

Kruse, I took the alternator out through the top. It's the kind of job that I would be a lot faster now that I've done one, but I hope I don't ever have to do it again. The Ford engineers had it out for us on this one, I think. I'm with you on wondering about these Escape alternators, not being happy about this one quitting at 80,000 miles. My Ranger has its original one with 176,000. I have an '87 F250 that I replaced the original alternator at 230,000 miles, and it was still good. I just wanted one with higher output.

Scot91370, did you replace the plastic piece that broke or leave it off? I've got until in the morning to decide whether I'm going to replace it or not.

Yeah, those engineers didn't have much room to work with but I wish they would have put the a/c compressor back there instead.

I never replaced it and my last alternator was over 100k when I got rid of her. Finally got a good one - the other 2 or 3 I put in each lasted about 30k.
I've got a thread here somewhere of ho I did mine. A lot of it was from another site but I did a few things different than that person and after the 2nd one I could do it on under 2hrs. The very last one I had a friend that owns a shop do because I just didn't feel like messing with it. He got the alternator from Auto Zone.

Thanks for the reply. I'll leave the piece out. I checked the Ford Factory Manual for this Escape, and it did not show nor mention the piece.
