2002 Expy XLT. When I accelerate when the tranny shifts, i can feel a series of "bumps" (not all of the time) almost like the vibration notches along side of the highway... This dosen't happen all the time, but seems to be worse when the beast is cold... Never happens on a the down shift. Usually only three or four quick "bumps". Any of you gear heads ever heard of this...
V-maax - go with Jim's suggestion and change the tranny fluid. These trucks are very sensitive when it comes to the transmission fluid - I'm not sure why, but they go bananas if the fluid starts getting old. Change it every 30K miles and you'll be ok.
My '01 epxy has the same problem, but I usually only hear it when it shifts into OD.
Should I take it to the dealer for the full evac of the tranny fluid, or can I drain the transmission using the drain plugs on the pan & toque converter?
My 97 explorer developed the same shudder at 120k miles. I changed the fluid, including the torque converter with Valvoline Mercon V that supposed to have shudder protection. I also checked the torque on the valve body. 1500 miles later, still have the shudder although not as bad. Any other suggestions please. What damage will I do if this continues? Is there an additive that I can use?
I have changed my tranny fluid at all proper intervals ( 3 times at 30k, 60k and 90k) but I also have the "bump" symptom. If my mechanic does a transmission fluid change, does that include the torque convertor or not?

Thanks!
Depends on how many quarts he adds after the drain....~4 qts., no; ~15 qts., yes.
I'd ask him if he's draiing the tc. If not, he's mixing a little fresh fluid with a lot of old worn out fluid.
