COP's Again!

Some of you may have noticed my previous posting on solving the misfire by replacing the #4 Coil On Plug on my 2001 4.6. I was real proud that I solved the problem on a Saturday, before my wife and daughter were to tow the horses on Sunday. Now, 10,000 miles later, same problem on #8!

Are these really bad, or am I just "lucky"? And am I just lucky again in that it's the back two COPs, which are the most difficult to replace?

I can accept one early failure, but two seem to indicate a problem. If anybody else has been through this, I would appreciate your thoughts and whether Ford has a "secret warranty" or anything. Last time, my Ford parts guy said they replace alot of them, and discounted the price (to 'only' $90), but didn't volunteer to do more.

I would investigate the rear hood seal to make sure that water isn't leaking down onto the engine and puddling in the plug pockets and shorting the coils out.

Good thought! Thanks!

Everything seems in place and intact there, but I guess I don't have a way to really tell. Is there something specific to look for?

I guess after it rains again. Before starting it, open the hood and see if you can see any water standing anywhere on the engine, maybe take a telecoping mirror and look around the rear coils and see if they look wet.

I will do that next time it rains!

I did, however, go to my dealer to buy a new coil. The service advisor (who's pretty much a salesman) claimed that they had replaced a few, but "nothing excessive". Still, I asked to see the technical director to complain. He seemed very concerned and did a search on his computer, after which he asked me to come back in the morning and have his tech look at it. I was concerned as to how much this was going to cost me (my truck is less than 2 years old, but has 60,000 miles), but he assured me that he would "take care of me". Famous last words...

Anyway, it WAS my #8 coil. The tech told me they have replaced a ton of them; mostly #4 and #8 (the two rearmost coils, but he didn't know why---maybe an accumulation of heat?). He thinks the new coils are improved.

And, they only charged me $50! I feel pretty good about that. Nobody can expect perfection, but it seems that Ford really does have pride in their product and stands behind it.

Hey guys, I just replaced all of my plugs on my 97' F150 with 95,000 miles on it and now its running rough like its miss firing and it was running good before I changed them out, what might be cuasing this problem? a loose COP or a loose fuel injector maybe? I also noticed dirt in the back 4 plug holes when I pulled off the plug wires, but I did blow them out as good as I could before I pulled the plugs out, so Im not sure what would be the problem here???????????

Unfortunately, it sounds like you may have gotten ahold of a bad spark plug, Has it lit the MIL yet? If so then you will know whick one to pull first.
Also, check to make sure that you didn't knock off any vacuum lines in the process.

Yes, it will say Sevice Engine Soon, it lights in yellow. It should come on breifly every time that you start your truck, but if it stays on or comes on after it is runing, then you have an error code.

Thanks, I got lucky it was just a loose plug wire on the #1 plug as soon as I checked and plugged it back in it ran fine but then it popped out agian after I started the truck up, so I took the plug out checked it, cleaned it and put it back in and have had no problem with, my truck is running real good now.
