Gents, having a hell of a time sorting out what i want to do with the engine choices in my trucks, please help:
Current setup:
1. 77f100 supercab long box (restored) with 351m stock
2. 77f250 supecab long box (rusted/damaged body great frame) with 460 stock
3. 76 f100 lowered short bed with 351w, aftermarket headers/intake/carb stock internals early heads on a later roller cam block
conundrum
1. have always wanted a built 460 put in my short bed, its a hot rod and should be. Its a toy. Have the headers already to do it
2. F100 sucks for towing, f250 suspension is the reasoning for the body swap. But 351m isnt great for towing race car and other behicles around
So, should i do that or build the 351w to hot rod that lowered short bed?
Or, should i do the motor swap to build the dream motor i want for it? And if i do that, what 351 should i put in it? A 400 would be great but tough to find in good condition when i have two good running 351s
What I would do is either build the 351w to hot rod, or build it to tow and use the 460 for the other truck. Either way those would be my two choices. The 351M isn’t the best engine, however you can make a 351M a 400 by finding a 400 crank. They are nearly identical besides the stroke length. I have a 400 and it’s torquey but not a very good performance engine
Put 460's in all of your projects. Plenty of power for your needs, hot rod or towing, and you can have just one motor type of parts. Lots of hot rod parts and info out there for 460's.
I'd put the 460 in the tow vehicle and build a stroked Windsor for the street rod.I have a buddy that has 2 of them one 408 and a 427 and I will tell you what those little engines are amazing! and you can build them clear up to 454ci
Thanks all. Yes the 460 is the dream, but can a 351w do enough for towing?
6000-8000lbs is all it would have to pull.
Another 460 would be great but dont want to spend that money finding another when ive got a good 351w
my hold back is ive already got some hot rod parts for both. 351w has a gear driven cam, performer intake would have to be upgraded, and ya heads and stroke kit is what i would do. Its c6 already has a shift kit... anyone tow with a shift kit in? Bad or good?
What are you towing? How serious are you about towing? Built the f100 and put helper bags in the rear unless you are pulling large loads long distance. If it's a toy 460 is hard to beat expecially because you said you have always wanted one.
Take a look at the MGVRs of the trucks. They might not be that far apart.
Thought about bags on f100, its suspension is sooo weak. A guy wants to buy the frame so i can get some cash for it. I haul wood for my stove as well and it sags soooo bad.
Towing a car trailer, have a 66 biscayne that is race and show kinda car and would like to get a camper for the truck bed as well. Hence the f250 body swap.
Just wanting to know what a 351w will be like towing that much. 351m does ok until there is a hill!!
That is a significant load with the camper and car hauler. You might want to verify you can legally do that with the f100s or the f250s load and tow ratings. Dot can be a pain if you are on interstates and look highly loaded. Sometimes it is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission though.
If you are just towing once or twice a years the 351w will be fine expecially if it is healthy. If you are towing more build the 460. The wind resistance alone will be significant with a camper.
We used to haul gooseneck's loaded with cattle to the auction yard 60 miles away with 360 and 390 Fords. more power is nice but not necessary we're just spoiled these days.
