After pulling the intake off of my 400 alot of ash came out of the port nearest the firewall, nearly enough to fill a 600 ml pop bottle. Assuming that this is more then normal buildup, any ideas why i'm accumulating so much crap or how I correct it?
The ash is very black and sooty, been baking there for a while.
If you are referring to the small round hole (not an intake port) at the end of the cylinder head, then an accumulation of carbon deposits and combustion byproducts is normal.
The corresponding holes at the front end of the cylinder heads are used for Thermactor AIR. Since there is only one cylinder head design, holes are drilled at both ends so that the head is interchangeable from side to side.
The hole toward the back of the engine is a dead-end (blocked off by the intake manifold). On earlier (pre-'75) 335-series engines, the rear holes were used for Thermactor AIR and the front holes were blocked off.
